Inlay restoration treatment is especially effective for stemming the spread of caries within a tooth and filling the resulting cavity. Various materials, above all inlays made of ceramic or synthetics, can achieve very visually appealing results; indeed, an inlay filling cannot easily be distinguished from a natural tooth.

The lifespan of inlays depends on the scope and execution of the individual treatment procedure, but can also be influenced by factors such as oral hygiene. Long-term statistical studies have certified that inlays made of precious metals as well as galvanic inlays have an oral retention span of 10-15 years.8
Ceramic inlays offer a comparable lifespan in addition to positive aesthetics; nowadays, their installation is viewed as a routine procedure.⁹

Synthetic inlays can be retained in the mouth for about 4-6 years due to the softness of their composition. They are usually employed for filling smaller cavities.¹⁰
