Eye treatments - Which methods are available?

Nowadays, many sight deficiencies and eye maladies can be corrected through modern, laser-assisted procedures or even bypassed entirely. At flymedic we have collected helpful information on the following types of eye treatments.

The eyes are considered to be one of the most important human sensory organs and play a very noticeable role in daily life. Indeed, we perceive them to be the "window of the soul": in the expressions made by one's eyes, we believe that we can apperceive a person's disposition and character. Scientific examinations have proven that, in observing others and processing visual stimuli, the eyes are unconsciously assigned higher priority. The eyes and the mouth of a person are the most important features of aesthetic appraisal in our perception. Thus, the expressions made by our eyes are of utmost important for us as well as for others.

Many people who have to wear glasses due sight deficiencies feel these to be an optical obstacle. In sports, a pair of glasses is not merely perceived as a hindrance: many types of sports require special glasses in order to meet the demands of the discipline in each case. So, for example, in winter sports, one should wear glasses that fully cover the eyes without metal frames; here, glasses of certain lens colors are recommended in order to provide the eyes with optimal protection against snow blindness. Contact lenses also do not always offer an alternative - there are people for whom they are simply not biocompatible or for whom their maintenance is too intensive. Additionally, not all visual impairments can be corrected with contact lenses. As a foreign body that has permanent contact with the human organism, they are naturally accompanied by some risks, e.g. an insufficient supply of oxygen to the cornea. Surgical eye treatment can lastingly circumvent sight deficiencies in many cases - for many patients, an incredibly attractive alternative to visual aids.

Hence, an increasing number of people decide to undergo surgical eye treatment for aesthetic or practical reasons. In refractive surgery, to which e.g. LASIK or LASEK belong, many deficiencies in sight are completely corrected with the aid of the most modern laser procedures. For weak to medium sight deficiencies, around 90 percent of patients can completely eliminate the use of glasses after the operation. For severe sight deficiencies the number of people who no longer require visual aids is at 70 percent - an enormous increase in the quality of life.
A further important area of work in refractive surgery deals with the treatment of gray stars (cataracts). The loss of vision that arises due to this affliction can only be successfully treated through so-called phacoemulsification. This eye treatment, in which the fogged lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens, is a routine procedure nowadays in eye clinics which specialise in it. It is successful in the vast majority of cases and is accompanied by very low demands for the patient.
