About one hour after the operation the first inspection of visual acuity takes places with the aid of a slit lamp. The incised slit on the edge of the flap is normally healed after a few hours. Discomfort in the form of burning may be experienced a few hours after the operation. An increased production of tear fluid is a common occurrence.

In order to improve the corneal layer's healing process, the eyes should be held shut for the first 3-5 hours after the completion of the operation. In the 3-4 days after the operation, protective goggles should be worn where there is intense sunlight or strong wind. To minimise the risk of infection, antibiotic eyedrops must be applied in the first few weeks after the operation.6
Light sports can be resumed about 4-5 days after the operation. Intensive athletic activities such as swimming are possible only after the complete connection of the flap. This generally takes a few weeks.⁷
