Femto-LASIK - RisksThe risk of incision-based errors is generally reduced due to the computer-driven nature of the laser.11
However, this treatment does pose a number of risks that you should be aware of. In very rare cases, a displacement or misfolding of the flap (keratectasia) may occur. With early recognition, the corneal lobule can usually be repositioned and fixed using a contact lens.
Some patients experience the growth of small protective cells in the area between the flap and the cornea. This complication can also, with early recognition, generally be addressed by re-opening the flap and removing the cells.12
Further possible post-operative consequences include the reduction of twilight and nighttime visual acuity due to reduced contrast sensitivity, halogons (diffuse, ring-shaped phosphenes or so-called "light halos") and glare effects.13
Complications such as bleeding and infections, which are more severe, are extremely rare. However, they should not be ruled out entirely. Cicatrisation is rare.
Your doctor will be happy to explain any further possible risks as well as your personal risk situation.
