LASEK - RisksProfessional associations such as the BVA (Professional Association of Eye Specialists) and the DOG (German Ophthamological Society) have classified the procedures employing an excimer laser for the correction of eyesight flaws of up to -6 dpt as safe and reliable.10 Yet there are naturally a number of risks.
In rare cases these amount to over- or under-correction of the cornea. After three months, aftertreatment can be performed in such cases. This is most often a non-problematic revisiting of the corneal lobule and epithelial layer and the implementation of secondary corrections.
Further possible post-operative consequences are also a reduction of twilight and night vision through constricted contrast sensitivity, glare effects, and halogons (diffuse, ring-shaped phosphenes, so-called "light halos").11
Serious complications such as bleeding and infections cannot be ruled out, but are extremely rare.
Your doctor will be happy to explain any further risks as well as your personal risk situation.
