LASIK - PreparationPrior to the operation, a number of preliminary examinations must be conducted. These normally include, among others, a corneal topography (color-coded visual representation of the corneal surface), a measurement of intraocular pressure, a slit lamp examination (stereoscopic magnification of the eye), a fundoscopy (examination of the back part of the eye's interior), subjective refraction (refraction power assessment with the aid of a phoropter, in which differently refracting lenses are compared until optimal visual acuity is reached), objective refraction (refraction assessment based on measurements made by electro-optical systems), and pachymetry (measurement of corneal thickness).2
Contact lenses should not be worn in the 1-2 weeks before the preliminary examinations, nor should they be worn prior to the operation. 3-4 hours should be planned for the preliminary examinations; the necessary pupil enlargement procedure does not allow for the subsequent driving of automobiles. Eye cosmetics and eyelid ointments should not be worn in the 24 hours prior to the operation.
For the operation itself you should plan around four hours; an escort should also be present if possible. Only local anaesthetic is used, so light fare can be consumed on the day of treatment.3
You should clarify any possible preparatory measures that need to be taken with your doctor; additionally, you should undergo an examination to determine your personal suitability for the treatment. This will allow you to address your individual situation and develop a personal treatment plan.
