PRK - PreparationA diverse range of preliminary examinations are necessary. These include:
1. A color-coded representation of the corneal surface known as corneal topography
2. A measurement of intraocular pressure
3. A slit lamp examination, which stereoscopically magnifies the eye
4. A so-called fundoscopy, which examines the back part of the eye's interior
5. Subjective refraction, which means that a phoropter is used to assess refractive power. The refractive power of the glasses is changed using lenses of varying optical power until optimal visual acuity is determined
6. Objective refraction, in which the automatic refractive assessment proceeds using electro-optical systems
7. Pachymetry, in which the thickness of the cornea is determined.2
You should stop wearing eye cosmetics 1-2 weeks before the preliminary examinations and actual operation are to take place.
The preliminary examinations require approx. 3-4 hours. Because the pupils are enlarged for this operation, the patient cannot drive an automobile after its conclusion. Eyelid ointments and eye cosmetics should not be used 24 hours before the operation.
Although the operation only lasts a few minutes, about 4 hours should be planned; it would also be to your advantage to be accompanied by an escort. Because local anaesthetic is used, light fare can be taken in on the day of treatment.3
You should clarify any possible further preparatory measures in a preliminary conversation with your doctor; you should also be examined to determine your personal suitability for the procedure. This will allow you to address your individual situation and prepare a personal treatment plan.
