Through balloon dilatation, blood vessels which are experiencing constrictions due to the accretion of deposits can be expanded and the blood flow in the coronaries can be ensured once again. As soon as the affected blood vessel becomes conducive to blood flow again, pains and feelings of anxiety should abate. Heart attacks can be prevented and acute heart infarctions can be addressed thanks to a cardiac catheter examination with balloon dilatation and a possible stent implantation.1,4

The extent to which the diameter of the stenotised blood vessel can be enlarged naturally depends primarily on the extent of the blood vessel deposits. The more obstinate these are and the longer they extend along the blood vessel wall, the more difficult balloon expansion proves to be. About one-third of patients experience renewed blood vessel constriction (restenosis) which may entail a second procedure. The implantation of a blood vessel support constitutes a somewhat more secure method of widening the blood vessel. Fundamentally, restenosis of the same blood vessel or constrictions of other blood vessel can still occur. For implanted stents with a medicinal layer, restenosis occurs in about 5-10% of cases; stents without medicinal layering exhibit higher rates of restenosis.3
