Gastric Band Implantation - AftercareAt the conclusion of the implantation of the gastric band follows a 4-7 day inpatient stay. Pains after the operation are relatively mild and can be mitigated effectively during your inpatient stay with analgesics. The beginning of the return to solid foods varies depending on the patient and clinic: in some cases, oral liquid foods may be supplied on the evening of the operation; in other cases, the supply of liquid food and nutrients may be accomplished through the veins (intravenously) in the first 3-4 post-operative days. About 2-5 days after the procedure, x-rays of the upper abdomen are typically taken. A gradual return to solid foods is then begun. 3,5
In the initial part of the acclimatisation period there may be vomiting when more food is taken in than the pouch allows. During the next 2-3 months, patients learn very quickly to adapt their food supply correspondingly such that the frequency of vomiting steadily sinks. 3
It is essential for successful therapy that you adhere to your nutritional plan strictly. Food goes from being initially fluid to thick porridge/mash to finally being mixed foods once again. Here, it is important that you chew long and carefully and eat small portions slowly. The need for fluids should be satisfied exclusively with calorie-free drinks. With the onset of feelings of fullness, the intake of food should be stopped. In general, foods which are too hot, too cold, too spicy, too fatty, and too sweet are to be avoided. These are only references; a nutrition plan which addresses your individual needs can only be worked out in tandem with a nutrition specialist. In addition to correct nutrition and sports, post-operative therapy includes regular checkups of your gastric band and your nutrition progress with your doctor. 3,4,9,10
Provided that no complications arise, performing normal physical activities is possible again after 7-10 days, at which point your ability to work is also restored. For pains, swelling, bleeding, or similar occurrences, you should seek out a doctor as quickly as possible. 3,11
Please speak with the doctor who is treating you about the above-mentioned measures as well as further individual aftercare measures explicitly.
