Hip Replacement - AftercareThe healing process that follows the installation of a prosthetic hip is important and requires a great deal of time. The operation constitutes a large-scale procedure which will leave you in a weakened state for a few days. Nevertheless, it is important to get into movement exercises shortly after the operation in order to accelerate the healing process and avoid blood clotting. Your attending doctor or physical therapist will give you corresponding instruction in the clinic. The occurrence of swelling and feelings of numbness in the leg and hip areas are normal during the first 3-6 months. Stitches should be handled carefully or even avoided altogether when performing body hygiene. The stitching material is usually removed two weeks after the operation.
The pains which arise in the first few days and weeks can be alleviated through the administration of analgesics; these can be administered intravenously if necessary. In addition, antibiotics and medications that inhibit blood clotting are also typically administered.
You can normally leave the clinic after a 3 to 10-day in-patient stay. Depending on the type and scope of the operation as well as the healing process, you will need to use mobility aids for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. It may also be wise to obtain help with daily activities for a few weeks. After your return from the clinic, you should make sure that you remain in a state of movement. Your doctor or physical therapist will demonstrate special exercises in advance. You will also be shown the best way to accomplish certain activities such as climbing stairs; you will also be advised of those activities that will not yet be possible. Swimming aids the healing process and is possible again after 6-8 weeks; you can usually drive again after about 4-8 weeks. You can often return to daily work life after approx. 3-6 months.2
After a minimally invasive procedure, the healing process is generally shorter: you can leave the clinic after 2-3 days, driving and work should be possible again after 6-8 days.
Please be aware that your new hip joint can activate airport metal detectors.
Aftercare activities as well as the methods applied depend on you individual situation; please speak about this with your doctor in greater detail.
