Artificial Knee Joint - PreparationPrior to the operation, the extent to which the joint disease has progressed must be clarified as well as what type of joint replacement will thus need to be installed. This is determined by conducting examinations and through photographic methods such as x-rays. The x-ray is the most significant guideline used by the operating surgeon when giving the knee joint prosthesis an appropriate size and form. On the day of the operation, routine blood samples are taken and an expository discussion with an anaesthetist takes place. The knee to be treated is marked and shaved.
As in many operative procedures, the installation of an artificial knee joint requires that you refrain from taking coagulation-inhibiting medications such as aspirin 2-3 weeks before the operation. You should also distance yourself from alcohol and nicotine.6
Please speak about these and other preparatory measures explicitly with your doctor.
