Spinal Disc Replacement - Introduction

The spinal column is the most important load-bearing element of the human body to which we owe our ability to walk upright. Its osseous vertebral construction and interstitially situated spinal discs allow for the highest possible degree of stability and maximal mobility. In addition, it bears a special significance in caring for the body as it houses the spinal cord in a protective casing from the upper to the lower half of the body.

Due to the heavy loads placed on the spine, many people suffer from back pains. Paraesthesia can also occur, as can motor movement problems such as when nerves are pinched in the spinal column due to a spinal disc prolapse. Thanks to modern orthopaedic methods, it is now possible to completely replace spinal discs from the neck to the lumbar vertebrae. Pain can thus be alleviated significantly and may even completely disappear in some patients. The mobility of the affected spinal segment is thus retained for the most part.1
