Spinal Disc Replacement - AftercareAfter the installation of the spinal disc replacement you can expect an in-patient stay of 2-5 days. In most cases you can achieve movement again on the first day after the operation. Typically, there is no attrition of bone material during the procedure, the healing process is relatively short, and early movement of the spinal column is desirable.5
The stitches can usually be removed after about 1 week. You are then also able to shower yourself. In the case of implants in the spinal column of the neck, you should wear a soft neck ring while driving for the first 6 weeks. For procedures performed on the lumbar vertebrae, doctors recommend wearing support corsage for 6 weeks for some patients.9
Further aftercare activities include, above all, regular physical therapy for strengthening the spinal column. This encompasses, among other things, stretching exercises and walking; overextending the spinal column should be avoided. Regular daily life activities can commonly be taken up once again after 6-8 weeks.5,7
Please speak with the doctor who is treating you about these and further individual aftercare measures.
