In order to reduce post-operative swelling as much as possible, a bandage is typically placed on you after the operation. Swelling, black and blue marks, and redness should fade away after a couple of days. Applying cool compresses aids this process. In the first days after the operation, activities such as laughing, speaking, and eating may be accompanied by pains and mild difficulties. A more liquid diet is therefore advisable where applicable. For incisions that have been made inside the mouth, the stitches typically dissolve on their own; stitches on the underside of the chin are removed after around 5-7 days. In the first few days, you should go about brushing your teeth and washing your face carefully. You may typically resume normal, everyday life after about 7-10 days.^{10, 11}

The titanium plates used for fixing bone positioning can be removed after six to twelve months in a second, smaller operative procedure.¹²
