Chin Correction - Methods

In most cases, the indicator for a chin correction is aesthetic in nature. Sometimes it may also be the case that a too strongly or too weakly defined chin is the result of defective positioning in the mandible. In this case, a functional indicator is present, which requires mandible-orthopaedic treatment as opposed to purely plastic-aesthetic treatment.

Sometimes a receding or protruding chin is also connected to a disadvantageous nasal shape, which is why corrections of both of these body parts are often executed in combination with one another. This so-called profile correction is usually performed using general anaesthesia.

A genioplasty can generally be undertaken using local anaesthesia after the mandible has completed its growth cycle. Access to the chin is achieved through either a small incision in the inner part of the mouth or via an incision along the natural fold (reflection) of the chin. A protruding chin is then corrected through the back-positioning of the jawbone and/or removal of part of the point of the chin. In addition to shifting the chin bone forward, a receding chin can also be treated through the insertion of an implant or parts of one's own bone or cartilage. Fixing the new bone positioning into place is accomplished using screws and mini-plates made of titanium.2, 3
