Eyelid Correction - AftercareDirectly after the procedure, strong swelling and bruising can typically be expected around the eyes. The bruising soon recedes, however, and generally disappears after 1-2 weeks. In a lower eyelid blepharoplasty, this can also last a while longer.11
In an out-patient clinic stay, you should maintain complete bed rest for 3-4 hours after the operation; do not disturb the lids by rubbing them or performing similar actions. Clinical supervision is advisable in the first two post-operative hours. Because the lower eyelid procedure is somewhat more demanding, bed rest conditions can be maintained for a longer time. An in-patient clinic stay may be selected if necessary. You should leave the place of treatment escorted.
The application of a cooling compress is advisable in the first few days in order to reduce the swelling as much as possible. You should refrain from any physical activity - above all, bending and straining - after the operation. Moreover, you should refrain from using cosmetics and ointments for about 5-8 days until the stitches are removed and the stitched areas of the eyes have been washed with soap. Sports activities can be resumed about 2 weeks after the procedure. It is further recommended that you wear dark sunglasses in order to guarantee optimal eye protection and cover bruises.12, 13
The necessary aftercare depends on your personal situation. Please speak about this with your doctor.
