Eyelid Correction - Methods

The operative removal of drooping eyelids or bags under the eyes is also known by the medical term blepharoplasty. Fundamentally, two types of lid corrections can be undertaken: the removal of drooping in the upper eyelids and the removal of "bags" from the lower eyelids.

In an upper eyelid blepharoplasty, excess lid skin and/or fatty tissue is removed. Depending on the extent of the drooping, an additional correction of the eyelid crease may be applied. In most cases, blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids is undertaken as a cosmetic operation. A medical indicator is present when the fold of the eyelid hangs down over the eye, functionally restricting its normal operations (e.g. obstruction of the field of vision or the development of eczema in the fold of the lid). The goal of an operation in this case would be not only the optical rejuvenation in this area, but also the facilitation of an unobstructed field of vision.

Blepharoplasty of the lower eyelids is applied for the purpose of removing puffiness from the lower eyelids. Excess lower eyelid skin and/or outwardly bulging fatty tissue are also removed in this procedure. In almost all cases, the lower eyelid correction is undertaken as a cosmetic operation with the goal of rejuvenating your face, especially the region around the eyes.
In both cases, the removal of excess lid skin can be performed using various methods, i.e. either with the aid of scalpel and scissors or using laser technology.2
