Eyelid Correction - Risks

Fundamentally, a lower eyelid correction bears an increased risk of complication in comparison with an upper eyelid correction.

There is the risk that too much tissue will be removed during the treatment ("over effect"). In extreme cases, it is no longer possible to fully close the eyes, with the consequence that the cornea dries out. This complication is typically addressed through conservative measures or skin transplantation. In the case of an "under effect", i.e. when too little excess skin is removed, the procedure must be repeated where appropriate. Further complications include an asymmetric treatment result, e.g. a lower eyelid which is situated relatively lower in comparison to its initial position, or damage to the lid-lifting muscles which would result in a narrowing of the gap between the eyelids. Secondary bleeding as well as wound infections are rather rare.17, 18, 19

Very rarely, the wound can bleed into the eye cavity and cause pressure damage to the ocular nerve.20
The doctor who is treating you will clarify these and other possible complications and risks in more detail.
