Jaw Correction - AftercareAfter the operative procedure follows an in-patient stay of around 3-4 days; for larger-scale operations this can be longer. This stay allows pains, swelling, bruises, and feelings of tension which arise to be treated most effectively. Swelling is reduced to an acceptable amount after a few days and completely disappears after a few weeks or even months. 7
Normally, you can open your mouth again immediately after the operation. Nonetheless, you should only consume mush-like foods in the first post-operative weeks so that you do not burden your jaw unnecessarily. 3
Please refrain from smoking in the first weeks after the procedure and proceed carefully when performing oral hygiene. The stitches in the oral mucosa are usually removed after about ten days. The screws and plates introduced for fixing purposes can be removed after around 3-4 months. If you are also taking a chin correction into consideration, your appointment can be used to address this at the same time. 5
It is recommended that you refrain from sports activities for 2-3 weeks and stay away from work for the same period of time. 7
As mentioned above, orthodontic aftercare is necessary in many cases.
However, aftercare activities also depend on your individual situation; please speak about these with your doctor in further detail.
