Lip Correction - MethodsFundamentally, two methods of lip enhancement can be distinguished: the first is an enhancement of lip volume and the second is the expansion of the lip skin. This procedure allows for either one or both of the lips to be corrected.
Most commonly, patients attempt to acquire more volume through an injection below the lips. The goal of such a procedure is not only fuller lips, but also the lifting of hanging corners of the mouth, the correction of age-induced wrinkles in the area of the mouth, and the accentuation of lip contours. The following filling materials, which are injected into the lips using fine needles in each case, are suitable for lip enhancement:
- Collagen: In currently used animal collagens, a natural protein is present. Swelling after the operation generally heals within 24 hours. In practice, however, collagen is used increasingly less often due to the risk of allergic reactions.
- Hyaluronan: This elastic gel is manufactured in a laboratory and contains no allergens. It spreads quite well; swelling is very minimal. The procedure is somewhat more painful than the those that employ collagen.
- Body fat tissue: The body fat tissue to be transplanted is first removed from another region of the body, e.g. the stomach or the thigh, via suction and then centrifuged and prepared. Swelling in the lips usually fades within 48 hours. Allergic reactions can be ruled out due to the use of one's own body material.
In addition, there is the possibility of giving the lips more volume through synthetic implants. The material used can remain in the body for a longer period of time.
The method used in the course of expanding the lips' skin is called lip lifting, which you will learn more about in the "procedure" section.
The method that is right for you depends primarily on your wishes and desires as well as the composition of your lips. Please schedule a comprehensive consultation session with the doctor who is treating you.2, 3
