Lip Correction - ProcessOn the day of treatment, specific points will first be marked on your lips to make later punctures easier. Then, the mouth area is cleaned and disinfected.5
If you have opted for an injection under the lips using one of the substances mentioned above, the lips are typically locally anaesthetised through either small punctures in the upper and/or lower lips or creams/bandages which are applied to the skin. If desired, you can also be placed into a state of half-sleep. The substance is then injected into the lips through fine needles. Because of the local anaesthesia used, you will only feel a slight sensation of pressure. After the procedure, the lips are typically cooled in order to reduce swelling as much as possible.
The insertion of lip implants is somewhat more complicated in form. For this minimally invasive procedure, you need to be placed in half-sleep or under short-term anaesthesia. The implants are then inserted into the lips through very small incisions in the corners of the mouth. Thin contour threads, which will later form the contours of your lips, are placed under the skin at the edges of your lips. The very elastic synthetic material comprising the threads, which is similar to tissue, is not rejected by the body. Binding tissue will grow into the implants and function to support them. Implants generally have the advantage of being able to be removed at any time should you desire this. Swelling recedes after about a week.
One method of enhancing the lips through an expansion of the lip skin is lip lifting (cheiloplasty). This procedure is also conducted using short-term or local anaesthesia. In a direct lip lift, a small strip of skin is removed from above the lip contour, exposing more of the main part of the lips. The later scar is usually difficult to see because it runs directly along the contour of the lips. In an indirect lip lift, the removal of the strip of skin is carried out beneath the base of the nose. After the procedure, the stitches are sewn shut; swelling goes down after about 2-3 days. Both procedures result in a visual enhancement of the lips, which reduces the distance between the nose and the upper lip.
The lips are also cooled after the insertion of implants of after a lip lift procedure.6
