Skin Scar Removal - Risks

After a laser treatment, hyperpigmentation may occur which generally breaks up on its own. Renewed and undesirable scar formation rarely occurs, but cannot be ruled out entirely. Wound infections can also occur. 4

With a chemical peeling, unwanted and deeper-lying layers of skin can be damaged and bring about scar-like changes. Bacteria can collect on the surface of the wound and cause infections which are typically treated with antibiotics; this is especially true during the formation of the crust. Pigmentation changes can also occur after a chemical peel, especially when artificial sunlight treatments are taken up again too soon. For darker skin types, the risk of this type of skin change is increased. 5

Reddening and light swelling or bruising are normal for both treatment methods and generally fade away after some time. 4

After a surgical scar removal treatment, bleeding, secondary bleeding, inflammations, wound infections, or localized feelings of numbness can occur.

You doctor should be able to clarify these as well as other risks according to your personal risk situation.
